I attended the Seed Vigor Testing Workshop in 2004. Two-week course included lectures and practical training in seed vigor tests. Additional presentations were provided to become familiar with US Seed Technology. Tours included the Ornamental Plant Germplasm Center, Ohio Seed Improvement Association, and Pioneer Seed Company in Tipton, Indiana. Since seed vigor was the objective of my master’s thesis I gained much from my stay at OSU. I became familiar with appropriate test procedures and was given precious explanations at the level of seed physiology. I picked up how some things can be done easier in a seed laboratory. I had a chance to discuss with experts about my experimental results, so I got back home with increased self-confidence. I was impressed by the enthusiasm and inventiveness at OSU, and I started to love the seed profession even more. If you ask me should I recommend the OSU, Department for Horticulture and Crop Science, yes I would, with great pleasure. I felt most welcome, the atmosphere was pleasant all the time, lecturers were inspired, and always encouraged me to ask questions. Long and open discussions were the most valuable for me. It was not just receiving new information, but also awakening knowledge from the past, connecting them with so many explanations that my picture of Seed Science became a new frame. |
